Stylistic Influences

The glass-making techniques and stylistic features found in this group of objects relate to technological advances along the eastern Mediterranean Sea, in particular the Syro-Palestinian region of the Roman Empire during the first to fourth century CE. Where form follows technique and determines function, these characteristics are significant as they indicate the origin of the individual object or its particular technique.

An early technique from the eastern Mediterranean and the first-century CE is displayed in this small bottle (HKU.M.2019.2468). It was produced by blowing a glass bubble and using a wooden paddle to shape the elongated neck and flat bottom.

This vessel was used to store a liquid, possibly perfume. The shape and proportion of this bottle are indicative of Phoenician stylistic influences.
